The author worked in Hankow with the London Missionary Society and this book is her view of China written after 18 years spent in the country during the period approaching the boxer rebellion. This book of course to some minor extend covers missionary affairs, but mainly describes vividly everyday life, covering such topics as floods, refugees, beggars, games and feasts, superstitions, heathen worship, entering the Dragon Gate, Hankow and its Gospel Halls, opium, etc.
