The Jews in Tianjin

This album illustrates the life of the Jewish community of Tianjin (Tientsin) which during World War II numbered some thirty thousand. For about a century, Tianjin was the home of a considerable and active community of Jews who had left Europe in the late 19th and 20th century seeking economic opportunity or following persecution. They are there no longer but the former synagogue, Jewish school and other community buildings remain. These feature in the 180 photographs which, with the reminiscences of ageing Jews who worked or grew up in Tianjin, shed light on a near-forgotten element in China's long history. Bilingual in Chinese and English.
